Margaret River Wine Region Guide by Wine Folly

Margaret River Wine Region Guide by Wine Folly

Wine Folly have just released their fun and informative guide to the Margaret River Wine region. The guide covers everything from the region’s wineries, wine styles, terroir and travel with useful, expert-made information to help you find what you like.

"In just over 50 years, Margaret River has skyrocketed into a world-class producer of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The styles of the wines here are different from the rest of Australia - you find the richness of fruit and ripe flavors, but you have restrained elegance thanks to the cooling influence of the ocean surrounding them.”

The Vintage Journal with Andrew Caillard MW

The Vintage Journal with Andrew Caillard MW

Internationally recognised Master of Wine Andrew Caillard has just reviewed our core range of premium wines for the Vintage Journal. The Vintage Journal is one of Australia's leading platforms for fine wine and Australian wine history. Andrew is a recognised industry authority and we are very proud of this latest review of Gralyn Estate.

We hope that you enjoy the read and perhaps treat yourself to some of Andrew's recommendations. With International borders now open, we look forward to welcoming you back to the estate.

Gralyn Estate - Classic Wilyabrup
"The Lilliputian Gralyn Estate vineyards are wrapped by around 200 hectares of prime grazing and dairying land in the heart of the Wilyabrup sub-region of the Margaret River. The property borders “First Growth” Margaret River producers Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Its limited unirrigated vineyard plantings from 1975 include 2.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and just 0.75 hectares of Shiraz. This is classic Wilyabrup country comprising free draining lateritic gravelly loams over a clay subsoil. The vineyard was established by farmers Merilyn and Graham Hutton."

"Gralyn Estate is now run by their daughter Annette and viticulturist husband Scott Baxter. Most of the publicity surrounds their fortified wine portfolio which is a rare category in Margaret River territory. Gralyn Estate’s cellar door, on the Caves Road tourist route, is also an attractive hitching station for travellers and Perth weekend trippers. The exotic offering of wine styles is clearly harnessed to an eclectic audience of wine drinkers and loyal customers. This review of Gralyn Estate’s reserve and fortified wines, however, reveals a core of very high-quality wines. The 2018 and 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons are an outstanding foil to each other and highlight the provenance of vineyard site and ageing potential. Despite its wine show success and accolades, Gralyn Estate should be better known in fine wine circles."

Best Experiences In Margaret River...

Best Experiences In Margaret River...

We are thrilled to be featured in the latest Gourmet Traveller magazine shining a light on the best experiences in Margaret River… Thanks Samantha Payne for visiting us and sharing our story… Spring Issue out now, pick up a copy and read the full article…

‘The River Wild’ - A trip to Margaret River promises a wine and food lovers Paradise as the region experiences a resurgence following last years upheaval writes Samantha Payne.

Margaret River’s community and hospitality industry have always been tight, there’s new life flowing through the area as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has seen everyone come together to support one another and focus on what makes the area special.

The realisation that Margaret River would be closed to international visitors - and the rest of Australia - was a significant blow to locals, who rely heavily on tourists, the pause allowed them to think honestly about the services and produce they were providing to the public.

Scott and Annette Baxter from Gralyn Estate know better than most the power of community support. Annette’s parents, who first opened Gralyn’s door to the public in 1978 - becoming Margaret River’s first commercial cellar door - were largely unknown in the region before that.

The history of camaraderie within the area is what they’re celebrating with the upcoming reopening of the original cellar door space in September. “Annette and I are proud to carry the Gralyn Estate story forward, introducing another generation of visitors to the estate.” says Scott. “We are both excited to share our little piece of Margaret River history, giving guests an idea fo what it would have been like back in 1978, tasting the first wines in the then-emerging Margaret River wine region,: he says. Sometimes when change is thrust upon us, it is about embracing the old and bringing it to life in a new way.

Nominated for Wine of the Year - 98 Points

Nominated for Wine of the Year - 98 Points

2017 Reserve Chardonnay
In the latest edition of Winestate Magazine our Chardonnay has been awarded 98 points and is in the running for Wine of the Year. We are very proud of this wine and it’s string of accolades. The pristine fruit is intense and layered with minerality, smoky oak and linear acidity which form a taut framework that hallmarks future greatness.

A still amazingly youthful, fruit driven style with lovely flow and balance of pretty pear and stone fruit varietal characters. The acid backbone ties it all together.
98 Points Winestate Magazine 2021

Hint of bay leaf, snappy green apple and grapefruit to both nose and palate. There’s a terrific Margaret River purity of fruit expression. Purity without being a zinger. Some apple skin bloom and a vinous, wild lift to the finish. Very tightly wound, but pure and long!”
98 Points Decanter Magazine - Exceptional

Big, bold grapefruit, peach and apricot aromas here with a gently flinty and toasty edge. The palate has a very composed, seamless and fresh feel with juicy, focused and smooth-honed peaches and lemons.”
James Suckling

Watch our latest video - Wilyabrup Valley

The Wilyabrup Valley is a place of unparalleled beauty where the forest meets the sea.

We have been farming this land since 1968. The Wilyabrup brook carves its way through the property and offers a vital source of water for the farm and habitat for wildlife.

In 1975 we established a 4.5ha vineyard. The vines are now mature - forty five years old, non-irrigated and planted on some of the finest gravelly loam soils in the Wilyabrup region.

The quality of the fruit being produced is exceptional, with organic vineyard practices producing grapes with perfect balance, intense flavour and fine ripe tannins - essential building blocks for great wine.
