Reserve Shiraz 2023

Gralyn Estate has been crafting Shiraz in Margaret River since 1979 and is widely regarded as one of the region’s leading producers. The 2023 Reserve Shiraz was awarded Best Shiraz and Best Red Wine of Show at the 2025 Wine Show of Western Australia — an incredible honour in our 50th year. From the very beginning, Shiraz has been part of the fabric of our site in Wilyabrup — a variety that has thrived in the region’s gravelly loam soils and maritime climate, producing wines of exceptional depth, elegance and longevity.

Produced from less than two acres of estate-grown vines planted in 1975, this true small-batch wine yielded just six barrels. Planted by Annette’s father, Graham, this tiny yet remarkable block sits beside the family home on Caves Road in Wilyabrup — a vineyard that has quietly delivered some of our most distinctive and highly awarded wines over the years.

Deep purple-crimson in colour, the wine is perfumed with lifted aromas of blackberry, plum, spice and cedary oak. The palate is supple and beautifully balanced, with rich layers of ripe black fruits, savoury spice and fine oak integration. A core of sweet berry fruit and finely structured tannins drives a long, persistent finish.

A powerful yet elegant Shiraz, crafted from historic old vines for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

What the judges said... “A great class showing the strength of Shiraz in WA. The best wines have concentration and vibrancy with good flow and intensity. This was a class with high expectations — the best were excellent: balanced, fresh, with good tannin support and oak not overdone. The right clones in the right sites and tended with thoughtful viticulture will always prevail regardless of the seasonal conditions.”

"There is a brilliance and brightness about this shiraz that comes off some very old Wilyabrup vines. On the nose, it bursts with ripe, plummy fruit, a hint of pepper, and some distinctive floral violet notes that create an exciting opening on the palate. It is sublimely balanced and poised with fine chalky tannins and a just faint hint of spicy black pepper. The oak is well managed, and it finishes very long. One of the most elegant shiraz yet from Gralyn."
