Best Experiences In Margaret River...

We are thrilled to be featured in the latest Gourmet Traveller magazine shining a light on the best experiences in Margaret River… Thanks Samantha Payne for visiting us and sharing our story… Spring Issue out now, pick up a copy and read the full article…

‘The River Wild’ - A trip to Margaret River promises a wine and food lovers Paradise as the region experiences a resurgence following last years upheaval writes Samantha Payne.

Margaret River’s community and hospitality industry have always been tight, there’s new life flowing through the area as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has seen everyone come together to support one another and focus on what makes the area special.

The realisation that Margaret River would be closed to international visitors - and the rest of Australia - was a significant blow to locals, who rely heavily on tourists, the pause allowed them to think honestly about the services and produce they were providing to the public.

Scott and Annette Baxter from Gralyn Estate know better than most the power of community support. Annette’s parents, who first opened Gralyn’s door to the public in 1978 - becoming Margaret River’s first commercial cellar door - were largely unknown in the region before that.

The history of camaraderie within the area is what they’re celebrating with the upcoming reopening of the original cellar door space in September. “Annette and I are proud to carry the Gralyn Estate story forward, introducing another generation of visitors to the estate.” says Scott. “We are both excited to share our little piece of Margaret River history, giving guests an idea fo what it would have been like back in 1978, tasting the first wines in the then-emerging Margaret River wine region,: he says. Sometimes when change is thrust upon us, it is about embracing the old and bringing it to life in a new way.

Winter Pruning...

Winter Pruning...
Winter Pruning
The removal of old canes and wood from our 46 year old vines is a very careful process… Pruning at Gralyn Estate is not a race, all work is performed by hand; each and every vine requires individual attention ensuring we produce fruit of the highest quality.

We are half way through pruning our Cabernet Sauvignon and the cool wet winter has provided excellent dormancy and topped up our soil profile nicely.

Our Vintage Port has a long history...

Our Vintage Port has a long history...

Our Vintage Port has a long history… When we first opened our doors in 1978, our ports were a big hit with the surfing and fishing community. Gralyn was the first stop for many in their search for ‘something special’ along the raw and untamed Leeuwin-Naturaliste coast.

Vintage Port has the ability to age for many years in the bottle.  We have cellared each and every vintage dating back to 1978, preserving a piece of Margaret River wine history.

Our current release is the 2018 Vintage Fortified, (image below) made from Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Inky crimson in colour with a complex bouquet and silky palate of mulberry and blackberry.

Get in touch if you are seeking a special vintage year. We have a comprehensive back catalogue of wines available... info@gralyn.com.au

Vintage 2021

Vintage 2021

It was a wild ride to the finish line here in Margaret River!

We harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of April with multiple cyclones brewing off the north west coast. We were fortunate to have our fruit in good condition, with full flavour and ripe tannins ready for harvest. We assembled a small team of locals to assist with our handpick and conditions couldn't have been better, it was clear skies and sunshine until the last bucket was lifted. Cyclone Seroja ended up crossing the coast the following evening, bringing 58mm of rain to the estate over 24hrs. The region experienced one of its most abrupt ends to vintage we can recall. We are very thankful to all those who helped us wrap up vintage 2021.

Watch our latest video - Wilyabrup Valley

The Wilyabrup Valley is a place of unparalleled beauty where the forest meets the sea.

We have been farming this land since 1968. The Wilyabrup brook carves its way through the property and offers a vital source of water for the farm and habitat for wildlife.

In 1975 we established a 4.5ha vineyard. The vines are now mature - forty five years old, non-irrigated and planted on some of the finest gravelly loam soils in the Wilyabrup region.

The quality of the fruit being produced is exceptional, with organic vineyard practices producing grapes with perfect balance, intense flavour and fine ripe tannins - essential building blocks for great wine.

The perfumed aromas are deliciously seductive...

A new release from our cellar...

2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Available to taste and purchase from Cellar Door or online via our website.

“There is a degree of understatement about this outstanding cabernet that I find really appealing. The fruit is intense, but not overpowering. It sits beautifully on the palate and, with the chalky tannins and fine-grained oak, builds inexorably to a very long finish. The perfumed aromas are deliciously seductive. Lovely wine.” 96/100
